榆次老街（明清街）南北大街是一条古老的街，店铺鳞次栉比，建筑古朴典雅，是一条具有明清建筑风格的步行商业街。
老街现已成为到晋中旅游的必游之地。
老街商辅，密集紧凑，店面、作坊、住宅三位一体，保留古代商家“前店后坊”或“前辅后户”的经营格局和特色，建筑高仅两层，多为砖木结构，木雕、金字招牌、朱阁重檐，古朴典雅，华丽高洁。
老街路面宽八米，均用大块条石辅成，然而，宽宽的街道让小摊小贩的遮阳伞一撑，就显得格外狭窄了。而且举目一望，满眼儿都是花花绿绿的遮阳伞儿，确实有些儿刹了老城之风景。
顺街而行，来到了钰泉庆门前，见有“醋”字，知是醋店，进门却没有看见一人。于是，我们就独自欣赏起店里的醋来。山西的醋是全国闻名遐迩，醋的种类也是很多的，什么水塔醋、宁化府醋、紫林醋、东湖醋、保健醋和醋饮料，数不胜数。悄悄地地揭开钰泉庆的醋缸盖儿，那一股醋酸酸的特别香的味儿扑鼻而来，刹那间弥漫了整个屋子，轻轻地醉人心儿。
出了醋店，沿街的小摊上有着各种各样的极富地方特色的商品，一小摊的肚兜兜让我们站住了脚。
老城的小吃很多，什么鱼羊包、德盛园“头脑”、榆次灌肠、打卤豆腐脑、榆次砂子饼、油糕、过油肉、灌肠油面、揪片和晋中风味小吃油面。
表弟曾告诉我们，小吃要吃街边小摊的，那味儿才正宗。于是，我们在一小店门前停了下来，先看看那白面剔尖是咋做成的。
剔尖，是山西人餐桌上的精品。白面可剔，高粱面可剔，杂粮面也可剔。
只见那妇女左手持一个特制的铁板（居民称“剔面板子”），右手握特制的铁筷，动作十分迅速将板上的白面剔进了铁锅里。
经不住那剔尖的诱惑，买了两碗品尝品尝。那剔尖两端细长，中间部分稍宽厚，白细光滑，软而有筋，浇上浇头，再配以调味佐料，十分可口，面也很精道。
